Welcome to Rotondo Walnuts

The Epicentre of the South African Walnut Industry
Our beautiful orchards are situated on the banks of the Orange River, the longest river in the country.

74 000 trees were planted on Rotondo between 2000 and 2005. The majority originate from Spanish root stock. They have been adapted to suit the growing conditions here in the Southern hemisphere.

The main varietal of walnut trees established at Rotondo are:
We have a small number of Fernette, Amigo, Chico and Sorento trees which serve chiefly as pollinators.

At Rotondo we believe passionately in the concept of regenerative farming techniques. In 2020 we added a large scale composting program to our farm which is beginning to bear fruit in the quality of our orchard soil. We have also recently introduced sheep and cover crop to our orchards. They provide a valuable addition to the farm as both extremely efficient lawn mowers but also by the extra manure and slow-release fertilisers they add to our soil.

Howard

Howard is another walnut variety cultivated in California in the late 20th century. We harvest our Howards during the middle of the season. They produce a large, round smooth nut with a good seal. Tree size is small to medium and semi-upright with moderate vigour, which makes it a good candidate for high-density plantings.

Hartley

Hartley walnuts came to prominence in 1915 when they won an award as the premium in-shell walnut. Today this “classic walnut” is the principal variety sold in shell. Our Hartley trees are moderate-to-large with moderately spreading and good vigour on fertile soil. They produce approximately 90 per cent light kernels.

Vina

Vinas are harvested mid-season. They produce a high quality medium size pointed nut, with a good shell seal. The trees grow to be smaller than other varieties. They are highly productive trees with moderate to good vigour. Vinas are well-adapted to areas with hot summers but, like many early-leafing selections, is moderately susceptible to walnut blight and codling moth.

Serr

Our Serr trees are harvested early during the season. They produce large nuts, with a good shell seal and a high kernel to shell ratio. Serrs manage well in shallower, heavier soil. They require less fertiliser and can survive hot climates, but should not be planted in areas where there is a risk of late frost. They are fast growing large trees that require good spacing to thrive.

Chandler

The Chandler cultivar was developed in California in the late 1970’s. Our Chandler is a highly fruitful vigorous tree with fewer pest problems than other cultivars.  Their walnut is large, smooth, and oval shaped with a good shell seal. Chandlers are well known around the world and are highly prized by buyers for their extra light colour and high quality kernels. Harvested mid to late season, Chandlers provide one of the highest kernel yields of any other tree. Worldwide, the Chandler walnut is the most prolifically planted walnut worldwide.
